AEC Receives Nearly 500 Election Ad Complaints, Cites 87

The Australian Electoral Commission has identified 87 cases of “unlawful political advertising” during the 2019 federal election. So reports The Guardian.

The commission took in close to 500 complaints, including allegations of unsourced and anonymous ads in violation of election law. According to the article, 90% of the complaints were derived from social media.

A former commission official, Michael Maley, said enforcing advertising regulations, namely on social media, is increasingly challenging.
