CMOs Have a Huge Impact in Shaping Societal Values

Diageo CMO Syl Saller is retiring after two decades in the alcohol business. She will be replaced by Cristina Diezhandino, global category director for scotch and managing director for Diageo’s luxury brands business.

Saller has pushed for agency partners in hiring women for senior creative and director roles. Saller has spoken about how much of an impact the CMO role has in shaping values within society.

During a speaking engagement in Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity last summer she said that “what we put billions of pounds behind absolutely shapes society,” she said. “Storytelling that’s always going to shape society, and we are fueling it. So the fact that it is so deep in our DNA—44% of our board, 40% of our executives, and 40% of our senior marketing leaders are women—gives us some additional credibility, at least externally, to be taking the platform.”

Saller added that “we all have to shift and it’s really important because what you see shapes who you believe you can be.”
