Blackout Tuesday Causes Hashtag Mayhem

Blackout Tuesday, which took place on June 2, 2020, came with an unintended consequence: vital information was inadvertently made harder to find. So reports The Verge.

Blackout TuesdayDuring Blackout Tuesday celebrities, influencers and users on almost all social media platforms shared black squares to show support for black victims of police violence. However, many of the posts contained #BlackLivesMatter and #BLM, which made it harder for people coming to those channels for information about protests and more to actually find it. Instead they were led into a deluge of black squares.
More appropriate hashtags included #theshowmustbepaused #blacktuesday and #blackouttuesday.
