Hallmark's Handling of Same-Sex Couple Commercial Sparks Backlash

The Hallmark Channel's handling of a series of commercials featuring a same sex couple illustrates the challenges faced by some advertising and marketing professionals. So reports The New York Times.

The commercial, featuring a lesbian couple's wedding ceremony and kiss, appeared on the channel beginning on December 2, 2019. However, following protests by conservative groups, such as One Million Moms, Hallmark decided to pull four of the advertisements from rotation. The mission of One Million Moms is to “fight against indecency.”

While the decision to pull the advertisement appeased some conservative critics, it upset Zola, members of the LGBTQ community, and supporters of gay rights. The backlash forced Hallmark to reverse its decision for a second time and reinstate the ads. Hallmark also issued a statement affirming its support for diversity and progressiveness.
